Hurrah!

Well exams are finished for me which is all good although I have a nasty feeling that CS255 (computer hardware) will have brought my average plummeting down but there we go. Can’t celebrate too much because most people haven’t finished.

I do have work to do this week which is quite shocking! I have a databases assignment I ought to do although that isn’t due until march I also have lots of “pre-coding week” fun to do which is basically group project planning which is basically gantt and activity charts as well as working out how to program a mobile phone in visual c# to do complicated GPS things. Coding week is next week which involves actually writing the software for the welly wanger project we’ve been working on. So we will be working 9-6 on campus which isn’t that fun and its going to be chaotic due to the whole of computer science 2nd year trying to work in one room!

Keeping up the great British tradition of commenting on the weather, its been pretty wild here over the last couple of days, properly windy most days last week the sea was breaking over the top of the harbour marker on top of the sea wall! Yesterday the sea was breaking just below the sea wall and being pushed up which meant walking along the sea front was a rather damp experience to say the least. It was also windy enough to be blowing foam off the sea which I’ve never seen before and made it look quite like it was snowing on top of the castle.

Right enough blogage for the time being but I will try and be a bit more regular with my Jona related updates from now on.

PS loving the spell checker in the new firefox.

Christmas and website update

Hello I haven’t blog for ages once again I don’t really have an excuse…..

Anywho…. at the moment I’m home in slightly damp Surrey for Christmas although it’s nearly new year!

I didn’t get home until the 22nd because I’ve been in the peak district staying in Chinley which some of my peak adventure peons, which was really awesome. And continuing the tradition of blogging on the weather it was foggy in the mornings but apart from that awesomely sunny except for the uber coldness.

Had a good christmas and have got an army of Jona mugs with a rather scary picture of me on after photobox screwed up the order.

I’ve spent the last couple of days redoing my website so it’s cleaner and properly XHTML and CSS compatiable. Although the CSS on my blog is still a bit screwed up, I can fix it in firefox but it makes it look horrid in IE so it can stay like it is for the time being. I’ve also finally got round to updating my blog software to the latest version of wordpress which has quite a different interface that I’m still getting used to. Whilst on the subject of tech stuff I’m loving the spell checker in firefox 2!

Next week I’m working for Glebelands but I’m going to be the only IT technician in for a lot of the time, I’ll try and blog about anything note worthy but there is limit scope for forcing the network to do intresting things!

I suspect this will be my last blog entry of 2006 so I wish everyone a happy new year (except if you reading this on facebook it will have cropped it before it got here, stupid thing!)

St Mikes Ball

Looking down my blog I haven’t written much about work recently, but I’m alright with that because it’s mainly boring. This week I’m writing an ASCII space ship “game” in C and also designing our welly wanger system……

Onto more intresting matters:

The weather here is still horrid, check out these pictures of the sea front at the weekend (not taken by me).

The St Mike’s student ball was last night at the Marine Hotel. Which was good fun although required poshness I’m sure there will be photographic evidence in due course although I’m not going to make it any easier to find!! :P

So another busy week is head in Aberystwyth!

I suspect most people in aber already know about this story. But if you don’t check it out. Bow street is about 5 miles from Aberystywth and lots of uni lecturers live there. The weather here was pretty horrid last night… but whats new really.

I can’t actually be bothered to write about anything worthwhile so I just I’d give you an update on the weather in a very british way.

Becky’s Birthday

We went out for Becky’s birthday last night to Agra (which shockingly dosn’t have a website!). Which was good fun although due to Aly’s inability to get ready on time we were late (only by like 2 minutes but there was much debate over who’s fault it was). The food was quite good as well coming from someone who isn’t a huge curry fan…….

We also had lots of fun playing with lego……..

Today I have been doing lots of coding and it’s not very intresting…. mainly involving fixing bugs that I would know are there or in other words.

computer being very silly!

Lots more work to do tommorow both group project and on the evil C histogram related assignment.

It’s been ages since I’ve blogged here mainly because I’ve had such a huge amount of work! In our group project we’re now at the testing stage and although there are some issues with people still not doing work it is going marginly better. My other major on going assignment at the moment is a C program to process Iris data. This program has to do averages, maximum and minimum calculations on real numbers (floats) and then draw a historgram of them. This isn’t going too badly so far but equally it dosn’t do all of the above yet………

I’ve done lots of other “stuff” since I last blogged but I can’t be bothered to write about it all. This week is going to be another busy one I fear with 2 deadlines early the week after (Monday and Tuesday). Although I believe there may be some Shinnagins related to Becky’s birthday (which is tommorow!)

This week I’ve also been playing with GPS on mobile phones as part of our group project which is quite cool although the next challenge is how to calculate the difference between two points twice is well documented but not trival to say the least.

Also check out the shiny new Aber CU podcast.

I haven’t blogged anything for a couple of weeks, because I’ve just been to crazy busy.

We have a lot of work on this year. These are the modules I’m taking this year:
COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE, C AND UNIX SYSTEMS PROGRAMMING
PROGRAM DESIGN, DATA STRUCTURES AND ALGORITHMS
THE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE
COMPUTER HARDWARE
DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

I still haven’t quite got my head round the new set of numbers!

We have a lot of modules that run over both semesters and count for 10 credits in each (long and thin if you like!). One of these is a fairly major group project with 8 other random people on my course so that could be intresting……..

Data structures and algorithums is taught by Richard Shipman who has set us a really evil assignment involving the “6 degress of kevin bacon” see here on wikipedia or here at the computer science department university of Virginia.

We have a dump of content from the IMDB(a 53mb file!) and have to write a program to traverse the graph and find the bacon number for any specific actor.

Freshers Week

Respond

Well its been “uber crazy busy”(tm) here. On tuesday I went to freshers fair and joined kayaking and climbing clubs.

Wednesday was registration, which we’re supposed to be able to do online but for no apparent reason mine didn’t work. Registration was fairly quick mainly because we ignored the uni surname system and just went at 9 in the morning. The rest of the day was spent faffing around on campus. I sorted out my NUS democracy card and found out that the new NUS discount card will cost me £10! On the plus side it is usable more places (including amazon) so I might get one at some point……

On thursday lectures started, my timetable is a bit evil this semester with lots of bit gaps in it during the middle of the day. From the looks of things so far we are going to have A LOT of work this year.

Today I was supposed to have rugby training this morning but there we’re only four of us so we didn’t actually do any rugby instead some muppet desided it would be a good idea to do some fitness stuff. As a result I am not rather stiff!

I’ve just realised how much of a list this post has turned into but there you go……

Week 1

September 25th, 2006 by Jona
Respond

A rather unimaginative title I know and too be honest we’re only at the end of day 1 week 1…… But still.

Its been a pretty busy weekend because a gazillion freshers have converged on aberystwyth. So campus is chauos, CU have been organizing loads of events and indeed have loads going on the rest of this week, which means that most members of teh house are coming and going at uber fast speed still.

I’ve been working on the new and improved CU website along with a couple of other guys. So that has taken up a fair bit of time but we are finally starting to get there which is all good……

Today I’ve also been up to campus to goto fresher’s fair, to get free stuff!

Managed not a bad trawl including a couple of beer mats, some pens, post-it notes and a lot of vouchers to eat places for cheap. I also got my NUS ‘democracy card’ and a shiny new green sporty card. On the downside I failed to register online even though as far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with my module choice so I have to goto the art centre on wednesday and register in person which is a lot of effort!

Tommorow is the sports fair so should be a good laugh. I suppose since I already have my kayak in the shed I should join the kayaking club and possible the mountaineering club (climbing) as well.

Anyway another update soon……
